The Outcast's Guide to Fitting In

This piece was composed while reflecting on the aging process and the desire for more. It is interesting that youth are eternally desiring to be older and mock their elders for their ignorance of modern life. Meanwhile, with age arrives the desire to return to some utopian time and a skepticism for the inexperience of youth. The sense that no matter the effort, humanity desires to possess that which they do not have is not unique to the aging process and is exemplified throughout life. This composition characterizes the feeling of not fitting into a real or imaginary situation. At times, several instruments blend together to make a single melody. Other times they seem to fight against one another to create a discordant texture. In a sense, there is a journey from the attempt to fit in to finding one’s own voice.
